Why aren’t we starting college football
season this weekend? I’m scratching my head, but I honestly
can’t come up with a good reason why college football is not
underway already. August is hands down the worst month for
sports for the entire year. The public is screaming for
something sports related of value to watch (sorry baseball
folks, the race for the playoffs doesn’t get into full swing
until September and the PGA has to be the worst excuse for a
“major”).
Here’s how you can really tell that the
public is sports starved right now…. We are excited about NFL
Preseason games?!?! You have got to be kidding me. There is
nothing entertaining about watching the starters go half speed
for 2 series or watching a bunch of guys that are ultimately
going to end up on the practice squad. We need college football
right now, and just think it could have the spotlight all to
itself for about 4 weeks until the NFL season kicks off the 2nd
weekend in September.
But there’s another great benefit to
moving the start of college football up two weeks…. By starting
college football 2 weeks earlier, then the regular season can
end earlier (Thanksgiving Day weekend at the latest). By ending
the regular season earlier we can avoid the worst overlap of the
sports season, the 3 weeks in November and early December when
both college football and college basketball are going on at the
same time. Move college football earlier by 2 weeks, have them
finish by Thanksgiving weekend, and don’t let college basketball
start playing games until December 1. That’s my perfect world.
